Facebook To Let Users See If They Followed Russian 'Troll Farm' Pages

  • Facebook will soon let you know if you’re following propaganda pages

According to Facebook, the Russian-bought ads were seen by more than 10 million users, and many of those pages were dedicated to divisive topics such as gun control, immigration, LGBTQ rights and abortion. These posts were created by a number of fake accounts (whipped up by the Internet Research Agency), and Facebook vowed to come up with solutions to prevent something similar happening in the future.

"It is important that people understand how foreign actors tried to sow division and mistrust using Facebook before and after the 2016 USA election", Facebook said in its announcement Wednesday.

Shortly after the election a year ago, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg downplayed the significance of the issue, referring to his platform helping manipulate the election as a "pretty insane idea".

KitGuru Says: It's great that Facebook users will now have the option of unfollowing untrustworthy pages, however I am more interested in the steps it's taking to move forward instead of looking back.

Facebook's new tool for viewing propaganda ads is the latest salvo in a damage-control campaign by the company that kicked into high gear last month, when they were caught redacting references to Russian Federation from an April report on the way its platform was manipulated during the election. Blumenthal sent a letter calling on Facebook to find a way to alert its users, setting Wednesday as a deadline for the company to take action. About 29 million U.S. users saw content in their News Feeds produced by the Internet Research Agency, according to Facebook. The issue of Russian digital influence has been so troubling and potentially so widespread, Congress even called top officials from Facebook (as well as Twitter and Google) to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee in October.

Facebook previously revealed that accounts controlled by the Internet Research Agency published some 80,000 posts between early 2015 and mid-2017.

As part of its ongoing probe into Russian US election meddling, Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee have released a "representative sampling" of Facebook and Instagram ads allegedly purchased by Russian trolls during the US presidential campaign season.
