  • North Korea will be designated a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’ again

A wounded defecting North Korean soldier lies next to a wall after he was shot by North Korean border guards in the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, in this still image taken from a video released by the United Nations Command (UNC) on November 22, 2017. It was the first North Korea defection over the border in about a decade.

On November 13, the North Korean soldier began his escape by speeding toward a bridge in a jeep at around 3:20 p.m. local time. Guarded by mines, barbed wire fences, tank traps and combat troops on both sides, the DMZ is the world's most heavily fortified border.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency said Wednesday that the country has no connection to terrorism and "doesn't care whether or not the United States places the hat of terrorism on our heads".

He was later taken to hospital by a USA helicopter.

"The patient is not going to die" said doctor Lee Guk-jong, an experienced surgeon well known in the country for successfully treating the captain of a South Korean ship who suffered six gunshot wounds in a pirate attack in 2011.

"As North Korea continues to threaten worldwide peace and security, we are steadfast in our determination to maximize economic pressure to isolate it from outside sources of trade and revenue while exposing its evasive tactics", said Treasury Secretary Steven MnuchinSteven Terner MnuchinAnalysis: House GOP tax bill adds.3T to the deficit Mnuchin: Comparisons to James Bond villain a compliment Sunday shows preview: GOP gears up for Senate tax reform push MORE.

The United Nations Command responsible for policing the DMZ accused North Korea of violating the armistice agreement when a soldier crossed the military demarcation line in pursuit of the defector.

The United Nations Command released a video showing a North Korean defector who brazenly crossed the border into South Korea, as North Korean soldiers fired their weapons at him.

During the incident, one North Korean soldier appeared to cross the MDL for a few seconds, and then run back towards the northern side of the line.

For several minutes the driver appears to try to free the vehicle, but the wheels spin uselessly in fallen leaves.

Right at the line that divides North from South, the defector crashes the jeep into a ditch.

The 24-year-old man, whose surname is believed to be Oh, was rescued by three South Korean soldiers and is now recuperating in Ajou University Hospital, Suwon.

The defector can be seen limping into South Korean territory before collapsing.

Carroll said the position was still exposed to North Korean checkpoints across the border.

Just meters from the South, he was pulled to safety by South Korean troops, who crawled to reach him.

The soldier show signs of depression and possible trauma, in addition to a serious case of parasites that has complicated his treatment, the hospital said.

The surgeon said he believed the soldier left North Korea of his own volition, but did not offer any more insight into the man's motivation for making the risky escape.
