The decision opens the door for the U.S.to impose additional sanctions on Pyongyang amid escalating tensions over the nation's nuclear weapons and missile programs.

The North Korean and Cuban foreign ministers "strongly rejected" the Trump administration's recent redesignation of Pyongyang as a state sponsor of terrorism (SSOT) at a bilateral meeting this week, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Thursday.

The two countries, who were involved in an embarrassing hidden weapons shipment back in 2013, are both under decades long sanctions from the United States.

Last week, Trudeau told an Asian summit that Canada stands alongside Asia in demanding North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs, saying North Korea's actions are against its worldwide obligations and UN Security Council resolutions. "Cuba pleads for peace and political stability on the Korean peninsula", he said.

The Cuban diplomat also rejected "unilateral sanctions" and the inclusion of North Korea in the USA list of state sponsors of terrorism only two days ago by President Donald Trump's administration.

The DPRK government delegation, headed by foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, departed last week to Cuba for a state visit. "Although Cuba and the DPRK are geographically distant, we have many similarities and I feel at home here", he stated.

North Korea and Cuba have agreed to strengthen their relations to reject United States' "unilateral and arbitrary" demands. Both countries face shortages of consumer goods including food and medicines for their populations.

The ministers, meeting in Havana, called for "respect for peoples' sovereignty" and "the peaceful settlement of disputes", according to a statement released by the Cuban foreign ministry.

Washington's relations with Havana have also deteriorated ever since Trump assumed the presidency.

Meanwhile, Ri blamed the "increased use of imperialist military force" for the worsening situation in the Korean peninsula, and stressed the importance of Cuba-North Korea relations as "two socialism-building countries". The North Korean regime has responded by threatening to launch a nuclear attack against the United States, and by calling Trump a "madman", a "dotard", and a "barking dog".

A delegation from the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) led by Kim Yong Chol, member of the Political Bureau and vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the WPK - met with Cuban president Raul Castro in May 2016.

Choe Ryong Hae, vice chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK, visited the country a year ago to express condolences over the death of longtime Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
