Prime Minister Saad Hariri Monday said he would resign from his post if Hezbollah refuses to accept changes to the current status quo.

In a radio interview, De Freij stressed that Lebanon was a small country and "must not interfere in the crises surrounding it", calling for "reaching consensus over mechanisms to apply the principle of dissociation".

Saudi Arabia has been backing the Yemeni government in its battle against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, who are now in control of the country's capital Sanaa.

In that speech, Hariri blamed interference in Lebanon by Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah for his decision, adding that he feared an assassination attempt. He did not elaborate on the new arrangement he was proposing. But he rescinded the move after returning home, to allow time for negotiations. Since returning to Beirut, Hariri has said all Lebanese must stick by the state policy of "disassociation", or keeping out of regional conflicts -a reference to Hezbollah. Hezbollah denies playing a military role in Yemen but has fighters in both Iraq and Syria.

He said it would be wise not to bring up the question of Hezbollah's weapons in discussions, referring to previous rounds of futile talks on this point.

Saudi Arabia and Iran are fighting proxy wars in the region and the conflict has affected Lebanon over the past years.

Top Lebanese Druze politician Walid Jumblatt on Saturday called on Saudi Arabia to enter dialogue with Iran and said that the kingdom's modernisation plans could not work while Riyadh was engaged in a war in Yemen.

A senior Lebanese official said the consultations at the presidential palace in Baabda aimed to help Hariri's government "get back on its feet", after weeks of political instability triggered by Hariri's November 4 resignation, announced in Riyadh, Reuters reported.
