Aussies on track for 2-0 Ashes lead

A defiant Joe Root insisted the Ashes series was by no means over despite England falling to a 120-run defeat in the second test at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday to go 2-0 down with three matches to play.

Root's side only need to draw the series to retain the Ashes, but Australia are heavy favourites to win back the urn and can do so with victory in the third Test match in Perth, starting on 14 December.

"To get those early two (wickets), especially Joe Root, really set us up for the day", said Hazlewood. "Looking forward to Perth, 2-0 up, looking forward to recharging and having another crack", Marsh said after the victory.

Root didn't add to his overnight score and when he departed, so did any realistic hope of the English reaching their 354-run target.

The dismissal of Woakes had an element of fortune in that the feather the nightwatchman got on the ball was picked up by snicko but not the hotspot when it was referred.

Fans in Adelaide took their seats in sunny conditions expecting a thrilling finale to the day-night match as England resumed at 4-176, but Josh Hazlewood (2-49), Mitchell Starc (5-88) and Nathan Lyon (2-45) starred with the pink ball to silence the Barmy Army, taking less than two hours to dismantle Root's men.

England's second-innings efforts with the ball were outstanding, as was their fielding.

James Vince began the unsafe dusk-and-dark session by edging a drive at Starc to slip, leaving the onus more than ever on Root.

Stuart Broad (8) edged Starc behind and the left-armer had Jonny Bairstow (36) play on to complete the win.

But after conceding a 215-run first-innings deficit, even James Anderson's maiden five-wicket haul in Australia and then a battling half-century from the England captain himself could not truly turn back the tide.

"Disappointing", said Root. "I don't think we did ourselves justice".

Only one captain in the long history of test cricket had previously lost a test after opting not to enforce the follow-on and Smith was grateful to his bowlers for getting him out of a hole.
