  • Lubiana Himid's 2017 Turner Prize victory is a specious cop-out

Lubaina Himid, 63, on Tuesday became the oldest victor of the Turner Prize, Britain's most prestigious yet controversial visual art award, for her works celebrating black creativity.

And what's more, unlike the other three artists on this year's shortlist, Himid doesn't work and live in London, or any other European capital. She is now based in Preston, England; her work primarily addresses racial politics and the representation of black people in art.

The victor of the £25,000 prize was announced in Hull Minster, to mark Hull celebrating its status as UK City of Culture.

In the past, the prize has been viewed as a vehicle for younger artists, but it has moved in a new direction this year, with two nominees over 40 and the other two short-listed artists in their 50s and 60s.

Himid beat British painter Hurvin Anderson, whose images often draw on his Caribbean heritage; German-born multidisciplinary artist Andrea Buttner; and Palestinian-English artist Rosalind Nashashibi.

Alex Farquharson, director of Tate Britain and chair of the jury, said he believed Himid's selection vindicated the decision to lift the restriction on artists over 50 being nominated.

Martin Green, Director of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, said: "We are thrilled that Goldie has agreed to present this year's Turner Prize in Hull".

The Turner Prize, organized by Tate Gallery, is considered the most high-profile prize in the British art world and one of the most prestigious awards in the visual art world.

"They awarded the prize to Lubaina Himid for a trio of outstanding shows in Oxford, Bristol and Nottingham". Among her best-known works is the painting "Modern marriage" (1987), where sarcasm joins with social and political denunciation, observes the newspaper, El Mundo. Her works exhibited in Hull date from the 80s until today and showcase her talent across a wide range of mediums, with works done in newspaper, paintings and wooden sculptures. No, she lives and works in Preston, Lancashire, where she's a professor of contemporary art at the local university. The jury was impressed by the depth and maturity of Nashashibi's work, which often examines sites of human occupation and the coded relationships that occur within those spaces - whether a family home or garden, a ship or the Gaza Strip.
