There were 14 women murdered in the École Polytechnique massacre in 1989 and 10 P.E.I. women killed by intimate partners or close acquaintances.

"Most women are able to survive the violence against them but every six days one woman in Canada is murdered by a man who said he loved her", Brown said.

"They're the women who cleared the path".

The first female civil engineer to graduate from Polytechnique, Michele Thibodeau-Deguire, is chair of the board of directors of Polytechnique.

In Montreal, a wreath of white roses will be placed at the commemorative plaque at the school where the shooting occurred.

While working conditions may have improved, Thomson says she's aware women remain in the minority in the science and tech fields.

Between 5pm and 10pm, fourteen beams of light will illuminate the skies above Mount Royal, commemorating the women who were killed.
