  • Argentina judge orders arrest of ex-president Cristina Kirchner

Her political clout has since faded with the victory of center-right President Mauricio Macri in elections later that year, but the populist firebrand now seeks a comeback as leading the opposition against Mr. Macri.

Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo, reporting from Buenos Aires, said Kirchner has been accused of "treason" and interfering with the investigation based on a memorandum of understanding between the governments of Argentina and Iran.

Ms. Fernandez's vice president and planning minister are already jailed awaiting trial, and another Cabinet official, Legal Secretary and 2015 vice presidential candidate Carlos Zannini, was taken into custody Thursday on Judge Bonadio's orders.

But on Thursday, Judge Claudio Bonadio accused Mrs Kirchner of the crime of treason and asked for Congress to remove the immunity from prosecution she has as a senator.

Bonadio accused Kirchner, who led the country from 2007-2015, of devising a "criminally orchestrated plan" to protect Iranian officials accused of playing a role in the bombing of the Jewish center.

The order is the latest move to resolve a case that's gripped Argentina for years.

The Senate, which is due to convene on December 10, will now have to consider a vote on lifting her immunity at the judge's request, for which a two-thirds majority is needed.

Kirchner was granted legal immunity after being sworn in as a senator in October.

The ex-head of the Federal Intelligence Agency, Oscar Parrilli, was placed under house arrest and ordered not to leave the country.

The news comes after investigators ruled the death of prosecutor Alberto Nisman a murder, not a suicide. He was found shot dead in his Buenos Aires apartment on January 18, 2015, four days after formally accusing Kirchner of a cover-up.

She has previously called the case an "absurdity", and pointed out that both she and her husband Nestor, the former president, were instrumental in pushing for an investigation into the attack. Eighty-five people died in the bombing.
