Le lieu de culte est géré par l'Union islamique turque d'Autriche (Atib), directement liée à la Direction turque des Affaires religieuses (Diyanet). Selon une loi votée en 2015 par le Parlement autrichien, les imams ne peuvent être salariés par un gouvernement étranger. Formé en décembre le gouvernement est une coalition entre les conservateurs et le parti d'extrême droite FPÖ.

" La fermeture par l'Autriche de sept mosquées et l'expulsion d'imams sont le résultat de la vague populiste, islamophobe, raciste et discriminatoire dans ce pays", a en effet tweeté ce vendredi Ibrahim Kalin, porte-parole du président Recep Tayyip Erdogan, peu après l'annonce du gouvernement. Avec leurs familles, quelque 150 personnes au total pourraient perdre leur droit de résidence, a-t-il indiqué.

En réponse, la Turquie a dénoncé ce qu'elle a qualifié de mesures racistes et islamophobes. Ils ont ému la classe politique autrichienne, toutes tendances confondues. La presse autrichienne parle aussi d'autres lieux de cultes musulmans qui seront fermés à l'avenir. Certains de ses représentants sont accusés de prêcher un islam radical. L'Autriche, un pays de 8,8 millions d'habitants, compte environ 600 000 musulmans, la plupart originaires de Turquie. La presse européen à largement diffusé cette information.
