U.S. President Donald Trump cancelled the planned visit on Tuesday of the Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles to the White House, saying he disinvited the team after it disagreed with his call for players to stand for the national anthem. He was one of the many Patriots who took a knee before the team's Week 3 game and after Trump used explicit language when talking about kneeling National Football League players.

After the event was canceled, Trump invited Eagles fans to a "Celebration of America" on the White House lawn instead.

Trump then tweeted on the matter, writing: "Only a small number of players made a decision to come, and we cancelled the event".

Warriors point guard Steph Curry, who has led his side to a 2-0 NBA Finals lead, said that just like last year, his team will not be attending the White House if manage to claim this year's title.

The first lady attended a White House event on Monday, her first public appearance since treatment last month for a "benign kidney condition".

When asked about the Eagles, Curry said any team that wins a championship will be faced with the decision of whether or not they will travel to the White House.

Late Monday, Trump nixed the Eagles' visit because of the anticipated low turnout.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Tuesday that Trump viewed the move as a political stunt.

Hordes of media crowded around the lockers of the usual suspects - Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Long, Zach Ertz, Jason Kelce - and the questions went nearly exclusively about the White House, Donald Trump and, really, not at all about football. When Colin Kaepernick protested against social injustice during the 2016 season, Jenkins joined him.

He also said, "The Eagles wanted to send a smaller delegation, but the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better".

"To clarify: No members of the team knelt in protest during the national anthem throughout [the] regular or post-season past year", she added. The NFL Players Association criticized the policy on twitter, alleging that it violates their first amendment right to peacefully protest.

The Eagles had proposed an alternative time when Mr Trump would be overseas.

"These are players who stand up for the causes they believe in and who contribute in meaningful ways to their community".
