  • Knife attack on Japan train leaves 1 dead and 2 injured

Around 9:50 p.m., a passenger on the Nozomi No. 265 train on the Tokaido Shinkansen line made an emergency call to police, saying that there was a knife-wielding person on the train and people were bleeding.

Police officers stormed into the rail carriage and took the man into custody after the train, carrying some 880 passengers, made an emergency stop at Odawara station. The 38-year-old man was later pronounced dead from injuries to the neck. He was slashed mainly in the neck.

Police arrested the 22-year-old unemployed suspect on suspicion of attempted murder, a police spokesman said.

The suspected attacker told police that he had attacked the passengers, according to Odawara police official Satoshi Oiye.

In the clearest sign that the stabbings were random and indiscriminate, Kojima reportedly told police: "I was feeling frustrated - anyone would do".

News reports said two women who appeared to be in their twenties were also wounded but their injuries were not life-threatening. Kojima said that he was not acquainted with the three victims.

The Kanagawa police will conduct an autopsy on the male victim to determine the specific cause of his death.

The man was surrounded by about a dozen policemen, he said, adding: "There was a lot of blood on his hands and waist".

The train was carrying more than 800 passengers at the time of the incident. The police seized a weapon when they arrested Kojima.

"Witnesses said passengers were crying as they ran to other coaches, shouting "Just keep going ahead" and "(the suspect) has a knife".
