Last week, Canada hit back at Trump administration by announcing retaliatory tariffs on up to 16.6 billion Canadian dollars (12.8 billion USA dollars) worth of US steel and aluminum as well as a diverse list of other products.

Asked if she was concerned that Trump could retaliate against European Union counter-measures by imposing tariffs on cars, Merkel said: "First of all, we'll try and see if we can prevent this".

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door", he said.

On Saturday, Trump said again that he might pursue separate trade pacts with Canada and Mexico instead of continuing with a three-country NAFTA deal.

Trump quickly responded by personally attacking Trudeau.

"We have to keep a cool head now and draw the right conclusions", Maas said.

Despite Trump's withdrawal and decision to double down on restricting foreign goods entering the United States market, Merkel insisted that she would continue to hold talks and work together with the president.

"I have made it clear to [President Trump] that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said.

Nevertheless, Saturday's events only reinforced the chancellor's commitment to forging a stronger, more unified European Union.
