  • US President Donald Trump smiles in front of a cake during an advanced birthday celebration at his meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in the Istana ahead of a summit between North Korea and the US Singapore

North Korean leaders, who have been subject to some of the world's toughest ever sanctions, have long wanted to meet with the USA president, in part because of the worldwide legitimacy such a summit would provide. Instead, the meet will set the ball rolling for a long dialogue between the two nuclear powers.

Donald Trump has chose to leave his historic summit with Kim Jong-un 15 hours earlier than expected, flying back to Washington on Tuesday night instead of Wednesday morning.

The shift coincides with a shakeup on the president's national security team - the addition of national security adviser John Bolton, who has been candid about his view that the North Koreans will never voluntarily give up their nuclear weapons, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a former Kansas congressman with a hawkish reputation.

Trump, speaking in Canada on Saturday, said any agreement at the summit would be "spur of the moment", underscoring the uncertain outcome of what he called a "mission of peace".

The White House says Trump will address the media on Tuesday following his summit with Kim and depart Singapore at approximately 8 P.M. The president had been expected to leave Singapore on Wednesday morning.

North Korean forces invaded the South in 1950 and the ensuing war saw USA -led United Nations troops backing Seoul fight their way to a stalemate against Pyongyang's forces - which were aided by Russian Federation and China - before the conflict ended in stalemate and an armistice which sealed the division of the peninsula.

The president planned to stop in Guam and Hawaii on his way back to Washington.

He was greeted by Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, who posted a picture on Twitter of him shaking hands with Kim and the message: "Welcomed Chairman Kim Jong Un, who has just arrived in Singapore". Trump said. "Well, I think very quickly I'll know whether something good is going to happen".

Earlier Monday, Trump similarly expressed optimism during a working lunch with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and aides to both leaders. Funds for military activities are obtained from remittances that come from the forced labor of North Koreans sent overseas, as well as forced labor domestically.

On Tuesday, an amendment to give parliament a decisive vote on the final Brexit deal will be discussed. There are two amendments that could prove particularly tough for the government to overturn.

Rodong Sinmun newspaper also seems to be preparing people for talks with the "enemy", publishing an editorial on North Korea's need to establish relations with other countries. Or, it could amount to little more than a much-photographed handshake.

As Trump was trying to build a bridge with Kim, he was smashing longtime alliances with Western allies with his abrasive performance at the G-7.

Pompeo said the U.S.is prepared to offer "unique" security guarantees to North Korea to ensure that eliminating its nuclear weapons won't end badly for Kim's regime.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before".

They also mention the goal of his trip, a "historic first meeting with the USA president", describing not only Mr Kim's itinerary but also the fact that he used a Chinese plane to fly to Singapore, rather than his own personal jet.

"People call it a historic summit but.it is important to understand that this summit was available to any USA president who wanted to do it and the point is no US president wanted to do this, and for good reasons", said Christopher Hill, a former lead US nuclear negotiator with North Korea.

Few experts believe that Kim, who has conducted several missile tests in recent years, is willing to dismantle his entire nuclear program.

According to FlightRadar24, a website that tracks the flights of various aircraft, thousands of people followed the progress of Kim Jong-un's plane. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters this month that the troops, most stationed on the border between the two Koreas, are "not going anywhere", adding, "It's not even a subject of the discussions".
