Will Rafael Nadal Participate In Wimbledon? French Open Champion Is Not Sure

  • Jun 10 2018 Paris France Rafael Nadal poses with the trophy after his men's singles final against Dominic Thiem on day 15

Rafael Nadal roared to French Open title number 11 with a straight-sets demolition of Dominic Thiem. Thiem, 24, is the only player to beat Nadal on clay in the past two years. Nadal, Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray - the so-called Big Four - have dominated the men's game to such a degree that Thiem is only the second player now younger than 28 to have reached a major singles final. Nadal now has 11 French Open titles in his highly-successful collection.

Thiem was on the couch, watching on TV, in 2005, when Nadal earned his first Grand Slam trophy in Paris at age 19.

The 24-year-old, who is scheduled to feature at the Fever-Tree Championships next week whose aggressive game style with his powerful serve should make him a feared opponent during the six-week grass-court campaign.

And if Federer had 20 Grand Slam titles, Nadal is breathing down his neck again with 17.

With 37 Grand Slams won between them, the duo are showing no signs of slowing down. The previous record was four, when Australian legend Laver won all the majors in 1969 to complete the Calendar Slam.

Nadal's win-loss record at the French Open, his only two losses coming against Swede Robin Soderling in the fourth round in 2009 and against Djokovic in the quarterfinals in 2015. The Spaniard officially withdrew before the start of his third-round match in 2016. Nadal's introduction included a year-by-year accounting of every time he'd already won the French Open.

After winning 26 of his 27 matches throughout the European claycourt season and 81 of his last 86 sets on clay, there is nothing to suggest Nadal's domination in Paris will end soon.

It makes little sense that these preexisting charges on USA exports would contribute to the president's sudden reversal. Some 75 per cent of Canadian exports go to the USA , making Canada uniquely vulnerable to a United States trade war.

On Sunday, Nadal will go up against Austria's Dominic Thiem, the eighth-ranked player in the world and someone who has defeated Nadal before.

Nadal's uncle Toni, who was earlier his coach, said that he believes that it is possible but also knows that Federer will, maybe, win again at Wimbledon in a month.

Juan Martin del Potro jumped two spots to No 4 by reaching his first French Open semifinal in nine years, and Thiem rose one place to No 7 by reaching his first Grand Slam final. Nadal is 49-2 since 2017 when playing on clay.

Still, Nadal was able to complete the job on court Philippe-Chatrier. The Spaniard also became the first man in the Open Era to win at least 400 matches on both clay and hard courts.

In a world bustling with ball-maulers yearning to topple euphorically onto Roland Garros clay or merely stand and raise the arms skyward in triumph just once in life, Rafael Nadal did so Sunday for a preposterous 11th time, even while choosing the standing option for only the second.

But he remains philosophical about the rest of his career which has so far yielded 17 majors, 79 titles in total as well as more than $100 million in prize money.
