"Mr. De Niro's comments were unscripted and unexpected", said the company.

The two-time Academy Award-winner was in Toronto Monday to promote Nobu Residences, his restaurant, hotel and condo project in conjunction with top chef Nobu Matsuhisha. "It's a disgrace. And I apologize to Justin Trudeau and the other people of the G7".

Trump and Trudeau have been engaged in a war of words over trade since the weekend's Group of Seven economic summit.

In two tweets that announced the end of US support for the joint G-7 statement, Trump claimed Trudeau made "false statements" during a prior news conference and went on to lambaste the Canadian leader.

The remarks from American officials prompted a former USA ambassador to Canada to call for an apology, saying both Trudeau and the Canadian people were being subjected to "insulting and inappropriate remarks".

The president called Trudeau "disgusting" and "weak" for how he pushed back against steep tariffs imposed by the USA on steel and aluminum imports from Canada and other trade allies.

"The advice I would give now to anybody who is in a position of decision-making is to keep cool and don't react in anger, although it's understandable", says Gotleib, who worked with former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. De Niro said he'd be happy to accept.

Former Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Allan Gotleib says the "special relationship" Canada shared with the U.S.is no more, painting a bleak picture of the trade tiff the two nations are now embroiled in. "When somebody is taking on Canada, they're taking Toronto on too ... but you won't hear any f-bombs from me".

De Niro is one of the most respected actors in the United States with two Oscar wins for Raging Bull and The Godfather: Part II. In addition to appearing many times as Special Counsel Robert Mueller on "Saturday Night Live", he publicly called Trump and "idiot" who "lacks any sense of humanity or compassion" in March.

The denunciation is less of a surprise when you consider that a month before Trump was elected, De Niro made a video in which he called him a "pig" and a "bullshit artist".
