Chopra had apologised on Twitter after many Indians expressed outrage at an episode of her television drama Quantico that showed a Hindu terrorist plotting an attack in Manhattan, with the intention of blaming it on Pakistan.

In his tweet in response to Priyanka's apology for a Hindu terror plot in Quantico, Kochhar had written, "It's sad to see that you have not respected the sentiments of Hindus who have been terrorised by Islam over 2000 years".

He later deleted the tweet and put out an apology, saying the "major error" was "made in the heat of the moment on Sunday".

But he later retracted his comments and tweeted: "I fully recognize my inaccuracies that Islam was founded around 1,400 years ago and I sincerely apologize", he added.

Popular commentator and Arab journalist Khaled Almaeena tweeted: "You (Kochhar) have offended me.As a person who loves India its people no matter what their caste or creed". Kochhar was awarded another Michelin star for his second restaurant, Benaras, also a modern Indian fine-dining outfit in London.

Kochhar - who runs the Michelin-starred Benares restaurant in the swish Mayfair area of London as well as the Rang Mahal restaurant in the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel, Dubai - was swiftly schooled on Twitter, both for getting his facts wrong, and for the display of bigotry.

But the hotel announced on Wednesday afternoon it was terminating its relationship with the Indian-born chef, who has appeared in MasterChef in the United Kingdom and India.

"We also remain committed to delivering the traditional culinary experience and high service standards that Rang Mahal is renowned for", Bill Keffer, the hotel's general manager, said in a statement.

"At the JW Marriott Marquis hotel Dubai we pride ourselves on creating a culture of diversity and inclusion for our guests and associates across the hotel and our restaurants", a hotel spokeswoman told The Guardian. "Shame on you (sic)", Mr Kochhar had tweeted.

In light of his comments, the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai issued a statement that said it was ending its association with Kochhar's Rang Mahal. He also hoped his friends and well-wishers will forgive him.

Islamic domains, such as the Mughai Empire, have ruled parts of the Indian subcontinent since the 16 century. This nationalist or Hindutva vision was once fringe but has increasingly become mainstream in the past three decades. Some called for his sacking while others called for boycott of the restaurant.
