  • Nike refuses to supply Iran World Cup boots amid US sanctions

Iran's football coach Carlos Queiroz has called on Nike to apologise to his team after the American sportswear firm said it could not supply the players with boots for the World Cup due to sanctions.

The last-minute announcement has left the Iranian team scrambling to figure out which soccer cleats the players will wear for the World Cup, which begins Thursday at soccer stadiums throughout Russian Federation.

Iran manager Queiroz, who has been in charge of the side since 2011, has expressed disgust about his players being denied access to the footwear to which they were accustomed just a few days before their World Cup opener against Morocco.

USA sporting goods giant Nike confirmed Monday it had stopped supplying Iran's soccer team with soccer shoes ahead of the World Cup due to sanctions.

That second part has left Iranian federation members confused - and frustrated - with the timing of the decision since Nike had been supplying the team previously, including at the 2014 World Cup when similar sanctions were in place.

This follows the recent decision of the Trump administration to pull out of the global nuclear deal made three years ago, and to intensify restrictions on Iran.

The two sides stressed that they would keep the door open for other winning blocs to join them in forming a new government. The announcement comes exactly one month after an election marred by historically low turnout and fraud allegations.

"They should come out and apologise because this arrogant conduct against 23 boys is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary".

"Players get used to their sports equipment, and it's not right to change them a week before such important matches", ESPN quoted Queiroz as saying.

On Monday Quieroz said that the decision could adversely affect his team's performance in Russian Federation.

The late decision has disrupted Iran's preparations, with some players reportedly having to buy their own footwear from Russian shops or even ask club team-mates for help.

Iran's first match is on Saturday against Morocco. Spain and Portugal round out the deadly Group B.
