In a statement North Korea agreed to work towards "complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

Frank Aum, a senior expert on North Korea at the U.S. Institute of Peace, told NPR that "Pompeo is correct that a significant portion of the denuclearization process could technically occur in two-and-a-half years", including the freezing of all nuclear and missile activities and the shutting down of known nuclear facilities.

While his aircraft refueled in Hawaii, Trump thanked Kim for "taking the first bold step toward a bright new future for his people", saying their summit on Tuesday "proves that real change is possible!"

Most Western observers have said the deal includes no new commitments from North Korea nor details on how denuclearisation could be achieved or verified. "No longer - sleep well tonight!"

After returning to the White House Wednesday, Trump also defended his decision to halt the joint military exercises with South Korea, which he called "war games" - a term used by Pyongyang - arguing on Twitter that the USA will "save a fortune".

With both Trump and Kim now having exchanged invitations to each other's countries, the United States president sees a promising personal relationship with his North Korean counterpart as the key to further progress.

"I have no idea" whether Trump secured anything of substance, said Corker, the retiring chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "But we will be stopping the war games".

In a series of tweets, Trump sought to take political credit for the summit but risked undermining the U.S. strategy in the region.

The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

Critics said the unprecedented encounter between Kim and Trump was more style than substance, producing a document short on specifics about the key issue of Pyongyang's atomic weapons.

The article also states that Trump accepted Kim's invitation to visit Pyongyang, while Kim accepted an invitation from Trump to visit the US.

North Korea's media is tightly controlled by the government and only ever reports positively on officials' activities.

"I think they are one of the great winners today", he said.

They hold joint military exercises every year that infuriate Pyongyang, which has long demanded an end to the drills and often responds with actions of its own, ratcheting up tensions. "I really don't care how generous we are as long as we don't go too far when it comes to our troop presence".

Trump, who has frequently sparred with the media, was also unsparing in his criticism of television coverage of the summit, singling out two networks for scorn.

A summit between the US and Mexico to stop separating families?

Trump and Kim conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and honest exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new relations between the two countries and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, according to a joint statement signed by Trump and Kim.

Current and former USA defence officials expressed concern at the possibility that the United States would unilaterally halt military exercises without an explicit concession from North Korea that lowers the threat from Pyongyang.
