Nadal beats Thiem for 11th French Open title

  • Beads of sweat run from Spain's Rafael Nadal's face as he prepares to serve against Austria's Dominic Thiem in the men's final match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadi

The Coupe des Mousquetaires was retained and Nadal could return to the French throne for an 11th term.

He was introduced to the sport by his uncle Toni Nadal, who remains his coach till date.

As if the task was not daunting enough for Thiem, the early signs were even more ominous. "Incredible", Federer said of Nadal's victory.

"He managed to do it well". "I was 11-years-old, watching it on TV and honestly I never expected that one day I would play the finals here so I am still really happy".

In the women's draw, Simona Halep finally got her hands on a first Grand Slam trophy as she came from a set down to beat Sloane Stephens.

Over the best-of-five sets on clay, Nadal improved to 111-2 - it is a figure nearly as imposing as the nearby Eiffel Tower - his lone reverses coming against Robin Soderling in 2009 and Novak Djokovic in 2015 at the French Open.

If anyone had a chance to ruin Nadal's coronation, Thiem couldn't have been better placed to do so. Nadal said. "Yes, is true that in my career, I achieved much more than what I ever dreamed".

Halep could have been forgiven if she had chose to give up on her Grand Slam dream throughout this painful process. He pounded huge serves that topped 135 miles per hour (220 kph) - about 25 miles per hour (40 kph) better than Nadal's fastest - and translated into seven aces but also had five double-faults. Amazing! One of the best sportsman of all times.

Nadal's latest triumph also moves him to within three of Roger Federer's leading 20 grand slam titles.

Nadal and Federer have won the past six Grand Slam tournaments between them.

A trainer was called and he briefly inspected Nadal's left wrist.

He broke the Austrian in the third game of the set.

In a 10-minute second game of the second set, Thiem suffered more trauma. For all the hand-wringing in years past over what would happen to US women's tennis after the Williams sisters, they seem to be in pretty good shape.

Before the clay-court season, the 36-year-old notably claimed he was interested in facing Nadal on the surface until he decided against participating following his loss in the Miami Open.

Spain's Rafael Nadal reacts as he plays Austria's Dominic Thiem during the men's final match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium Sunday

He has not been broken since. Could Thiem provide us with a classic final? So I just am just going to keep fighting for things and that's it.

Thiem was hampered by his many unforced errors after long rallies.

Serving to stay in the match at 4-5, the Austrian allowed mistakes to creep into his game.

He saved three break points in his first service game, but a wayward backhand ensured Nadal took the fourth.

A long run at the top seemed unlikely then, but he takes great satisfaction in enduring. "Because winning any tournament eleven times is unbelievable".

Maybe nerves were a factor in Thiem's performance.

The crowd cheered when Zidane was shown on the big screen.

Slow starts have plagued Nadal in several of his matches this fortnight, most notably against 11th-seed Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinals. He converted the second to make the score 2-1. Nadal is a huge Madrid fan, and is often seen at games.

Rafael Nadal looks borderline unbeatable at the moment.

"To me it's still been two great weeks", Thiem told the Philippe Chatrier centre court and his opponent.

Won his second Grand Slam of 2017 at Flushing Meadows after a 10th French Open title in June.

Krejcikova and Siniakova, who are both 22, were playing in their fifth major tournament together.

- Won the ATP newcomer of the year in 2003.

Roger Federer remains close in the rankings while Juan Martin del Potro has made an impressive climb after reaching the semi-finals.
