  • Mom says city wants $132K for sculpture knocked over by her son

That's precisely what happened to a couple from Kansas, whose 5-year-old son broke a sculpture-titled "Aphrodite Di Kansas City", made of glass and pieces of mirror-by "hugging" it.

The family was attending a wedding at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center in Overland Park when the boy-who was unattended at the moment-wrapped his arms around the piece and caused it to fall to the ground, breaking it.

"We heard a bunch of commotion and I thought, 'Whose yelling at my son?' This glass mosaic torso is laying on the ground and someone is following me around demanding my personal information".

"No, it's $132,000", Goodman said the city told her.

A family could be on the hook for more than $170,000 after their child accidentally knocked over a valuable sculpture that was on display at a U.S. community centre. No plexiglass. Not protected.

City spokesperson Sean Reilly says the work was on loan to the city and that it was obligated to file a claim with its insurance company for the damage. "There wasn't even a sign around it that said, 'Do not touch'".

"My children are well-supervised, but all people get distracted", she added.

She said her son didn't damage the sculpture on objective. "We are responsible to protect the public investment".

Kansas City artist Bill Lyons created the sculpture.

The mom explained she was saying goodbye to the bride's father when her son wandered off towards the statue while insisting he and his three siblings, who were also there, are always well behaved.

'It's clear accidents happen and this was an accident.

The boy's mother Sarah Goodman has now been hit with a AU$177,000 compensation demand, which she is refusing to pay.

"I think there was a few different parties going on; bridal showers birthday parties", Goodman said.

"I don't want to diminish the value of their art, but I can't pay for that", Goodman told the paper.

"He's honestly been having bad dreams every night", she said.

The insurance company now says the family is on the hook for the statue.
