Maryland shooting: Capital-Gazette owner 'deeply saddened'

  • Rob Hiaasen was reportedly identified as one of the five victims in Thursday's shooting attack in Annapolis Maryland

The gunman has been taken to custody. This incident follows similar mass shootings in Parkland, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada, Santa Fe, Texas, and many others. No terror outfit has taken responsibility for the shooting as yet.

Authorities on Thursday said the gunman appeared to have a "vendetta" against the paper and had staged a "targeted attack".

"There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you're under your desk and then hear the gunman reload", tweeted reporter Phil Davis. A year later, Ramos filed a defamation suit against the paper that a judge swiftly dismissed.

'But as much as I'm going to try to articulate how traumatizing it is to be hiding under your desk, you don't know until you're there and you feel helpless'.

Anne Arundel County executive Steve Schuh told reporters at a briefing after the shooting that a male suspect was in custody and was being interrogated. "We ask all employees, visitors, patients and volunteers to stay in our buildings", they said in a statement.

Ramos mutilated his fingers in order to avoid identification, news agency AP reported. The news agency says that prior to that, he had been a staff reporter at the Palm Beach Post and news anchor and reporter for radio stations across the South.

Assistant managing editor Rob Hiaasen's family is "devastated" by his death, said his brother, author Carl Hiaasen.

"We did recover what we thought may have been an explosive device", William Krampf, acting chief of the Anne Arundel County Police Department, said.

The official was not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation by name and spoke on condition of anonymity to share details.

The Capital Gazette is owned by The Baltimore Sun located in Baltimore.

As investigators tried to piece together what happened, photojournalist Josh McKerrow shared his unshakeable resolve to keep The Capital Gazette publishing for his Annapolis community, tweeting: "There will be a Capital Friday".

Law enforcement in Baltimore and New York City deployed extra officers to the office of the New York Times and other major media outlets as a precaution, authorities said.

In a later interview with the Gazette's parent company, the Baltimore Sun, Davis reflected further on what he had been through.

Although a motive is not yet known, the shooting drew the attention of media groups, including Reporters Without Borders, which said it was deeply disturbed by the events that unfolded in Annapolis. "Thank you to all of the First Responders who are now on the scene", Trump said in a tweet.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders later condemned the attack on "innocent journalists doing their job".

The shooting - which came amid months of verbal and online attacks on the "fake news media" from politicians and including President Donald Trump - prompted New York City police to immediately tighten security at news organizations in the nation's media capital.

Following police activity late Thursday around a Laurel apartment complex where the suspect is believed to have resided, officers by 2 a.m. could be seen clearing the scene.
