  • The latest study to link coffee and longevity adds to a growing body of evidence that far from a vice the brew can be protective of good health

In the latest of the bunch, just published by JAMA Internal Medicine, scientists found that drinking coffee correlated to a longer lifespan - and that those who drank even more seemed to live even longer. But overall, relative to non-drinkers, those who drank one cup of coffee per day had an 8% lower risk of premature death - a rate that rose slightly as consumption increased, peaking at 16% for those drinking six to seven daily cups, before dipping slightly, to 14%, for those having eight or more cups each day. The mean age of the participants was 57 years (range, 38-73 years); 271 019 (54%) were female, and 387 494 (78%) were coffee drinkers. But this is the first large study to show a benefit regardless of a drinker's caffeine metabolism.

Is coffee good or bad?

Because some people's genetics make them slower to metabolize caffeine, the researchers wanted to see if that made coffee consumption riskier for these individuals.

Coffee beans are rich in polyphenols; they contain higher concentrations of these antioxidants than blackberries or kale.

Coffee lovers around the world are enjoying their cup of brew a little bit more today.

Researchers arrived at this conclusion after assessing the health of 500,000 people who took part in a study based in the United Kingdom. "Such people would be better to avoid too much coffee, or move toward decaffeinated choices, that this study has shown still have beneficial associations". A 2014 study found that there was zero evidence of dehydration with moderate daily coffee intake.

Enigma Cafe staff member Clarke Gardiner said coffee for him was "the essence of energy to wake up in the morning", drinking multiple coffees every day at work - including at night time. And it also doesn't matter what version of the "coffee gene" people have.

The results support the recommendations of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which states consuming three to five cups of coffee per day, or 400 milligrams per day, of caffeine is not detrimental to healthy individuals. The study looked at some common gene variations that help determine whether someone metabolizes caffeine quickly or slowly, but didn't find any difference in health risk.

Despite that, she also said the results reinforce previous research and add additional reassurance for coffee drinkers. But non-coffee drinkers were more likely to have died than coffee-drinkers.

Other studies have suggested that substances in coffee may reduce inflammation and improve how the body uses insulin, which can reduce chances for developing diabetes.
