  • Baltimore: hospital evacuated due to tuberculosis threat – reports

An investigation is underway after people may have been exposed to Tuberculosis at Johns Hopkins, according to the hospital.

The Baltimore City Fire Department is now investigating the release of tuberculosis, which was being transported in an internal bridge connecting two cancer research buildings, according to a statement from Kim Hoppe, a spokesperson for the hospital.

A building at the Johns Hopkins Hospital complex has been evacuated Thursday afternoon because of a possible tuberculosis exposure, Baltimore City fire officials told 11 News.

"There was a small tube that contained a frozen sample and it was dropped and the lid came off while the sample was still frozen inside", said Dr. Landon King, executive vice dean at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

The two buildings, which are connected by an enclosed, elevated bridge, are research centers.

A cancer research building at 1500 Orleans St. was evacuated, according to Baltimore Fire Chief Roman Clark. Public safety officials as well as infectious disease experts have now cleared the buildings, and the evacuation has been lifted. Soon after, a fire alarm was pulled and employees were evacuated.

TB is spread through the air and typically attacks the lungs.

Earlier today, a small sample of frozen tuberculosis that was being used for research purposes was inadvertently released in a non-patient area.

But authorities later confirmed "that there was no risk to anyone on campus", Hoppe said.

In 2016, about 10.5 million people became ill around the world with tuberculosis, and 1.7 million were killed by it. "If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal".
