  • UK's Boris Johnson to Trump Iran deal has weaknesses but don't dump

The Prime Minister's latest political drama began late on Sunday night when Davis announced his decision to leave his post, declaring he could not support May's plan for Brexit agreed plan.

According to BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Johnson's departure from May's cabinet has turned an "embarrassing and hard situation for the PM into potentially a full-blown crisis".

May is scheduled to address Parliament about the state of her Brexit plan later on Monday.

Leading proponents of Brexit called on her to abandon the deal struck with the Cabinet last Friday at Chequers, her country retreat outside London.

Monday brings little to the field on the economic calendar for the GBP, with only a speech due at 07:50 GMT from the BoE's MPC member Broadbent, who will be delivering the opening remarks at the BoE-hosted Economics and Psychology conference.

Theresa May faces a mortal threat to her leadership of the Conservative Party and Government today.

Steve Baker, a junior Brexit minister also resigned.

May's camp is confident that the prime minister could survive a no-confidence vote, not least the pro-Brexit wing of the party does not number the 150 signatures a successful challenge would need, and because most of her colleagues fear such turmoil could spark a general election and install Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in Downing Street.

Boris Johnson quits as Britain's foreign minister
Davis's resignation shattered a fragile peace in May's government, which is split between supporters of "hard" and "soft" Brexit. Mr Davis was praised last night by Tory MPs including Jacob Rees-Mogg, who said he would oppose Mrs May's Brexit proposals.

The plan seeks to keep the United Kingdom and the European Union in a free-trade zone for goods, and commits Britain to maintaining the same rules as the bloc for goods and agricultural products.

May said the plan would deliver frictionless trade with Europe and was the "only way to avoid a hard border" between the U.K.'s Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland.

Some Brexit-supporting lawmakers are angry at the proposals, saying they will keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world. They believe the proposals breach several of the "red lines" the government has set out, including a commitment to leave the bloc's tariff-free customs union.

"Fantastic news. Well done David Davis for having the principal and guts to resign", Brexit campaigner and Conservative lawmaker Andrea Jenkyns said on Twitter.

They fear a clean break would cost jobs.

"Nice try", she said with a touch of bravado.

"I like Theresa May, I think she's a good prime minister, " Davis said.
