  • Starbucks to ditch plastic straws globally by 2020 to help environment

Starbucks said that it is the largest food and beverage retailer to have promised to get rid of plastic straws.

The coffee giant said Monday that it will replace the ubiquitous plastic straw with recyclable "strawless lids", as well as straws made from biodegradable materials, as part of a no-plastic-straws movement that has gained momentum in recent years.

Starbucks announced plans to eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year from its stores worldwide by 2020.

To eliminate straws, Starbucks is transitioning from the flat, plastic lids that require them, to ones that feature a raised lip you can drink from.

In a statement, CEO Kevin Johnson called the move away from plastic straws a "significant milestone" in the company's sustainability efforts.

According to a release, Starbucks said the lid is now available in more than 8,000 stores in the US and Canada for select beverages, including Draft Nitro and Cold Foam. Vancouver will become the first Canadian city to do so in the fall of 2019.

A global rollout of the strawless lid will begin in Europe, starting with select stores in France and the Netherlands.

Sixteen Tampa Bay businesses have received national Ocean Friendly certification through the coalition by voluntarily banning foam products and plastic bags, only providing straws and to-go utensils upon request, and enforcing recycling programs.

Starbucks said the conversion will be complete by 2020.

Last month, McDonald's (MCD) said that it would start switching to paper straws in the United Kingdom and Ireland in September.

Viral videos - including one depicting researchers extracting a plastic straw from a sea turtle's bleeding nostril - is prompting some companies and municipalities to find ocean-friendlier alternatives.

"With eight million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we can not afford to let industry sit on the sidelines, and we are grateful for Starbucks leadership in this space".
