  • A massive data breach on Timehop app has exposed the private details of more than 21 million people according to a new report. The service links to users social media accounts and claims to be'reinventing reminiscing by resurfacing old phot

The app was briefly popular a few years ago, before Facebook built a similar feature, known as On This Day, into its own social network.

Per-user, per-service access tokens of this sort are a great idea (notably, this system means you never have to share your actual passwords with a third party), as long as the company holding the tokens doesn't let crooks wander in and steal them. Compromised data includes names, email addresses, and 4.7 million phone numbers.

Insist on two-factor authentication.

Timehop, which resurfaces photos and posts from social media accounts, suffered a data breach July 4 that affected 21 million accounts.

It was closed down just two hours and 19 minutes later.

They did not carry out the attack until July 4, when the attacker transferred the compromised data and attacked Timehop's production database.

Timehop noted that none of its "memories" (the social media posts and photos the app stores) were accessed. We have deactivated these keys so they can no longer be used by anyone - so you'll have to re-authenticate to our App.

Iran oil minister: No change in production, export
Iran, OPEC's third-largest producer, is facing U.S. sanctions on its oil exports that are prompting some buyers to cut purchases. South Korea halted all Iranian oil shipments in July for the first time in six years amid U.S. pressure.

As a result, Timehop says users may have been logged out of the app to reset all of the keys. All of them had their names, email addresses and part of the access tokens used to collect information from their social media profiles compromised.

But the company has also warned that "there was a short time window during which it was theoretically possible for unauthorized users to access those posts" but has "no evidence that this actually happened". Some fraudsters have begun to immediately discount secure phones altogether.

If you have T-Mobile as your provider, call 611 from your T-Mobile device or 1-800-937-8997 and ask the customer care representative to assist with limiting portability of your phone number. Again, some institutions offer notifications to help with this, which will alert you when your card is used online. On the upside, users' financial information, social media posts/photos, direct messages, and Timehop streaks remain secure and unaffected.

Timehop disclosed a data breach that affected 21 million accounts.

"It is recommended that you take additional security precautions with your cellular provider to ensure that your number can not be ported", the company adds. The company said a hacker gained access to its infrastructure and stole details on its users that included usernames, emails, telephone numbers, and access keys.

In terms of how its network was accessed, it appears that the attacker was able to compromise Timehop's cloud computing environment by targeting an account that had not been protected by multifactor authentication. At 2:43 pm US Eastern Time the attacker conducted a specific action that triggered an alarm, and Timehop engineers began to investigate.
