US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, reacting to a provocative statement from North Korea, said that if Washington's demands were "gangster-like", then the world is a gangster.

North Korea called the outcome of the discussion "worrisome" and argued that the "cancerous issues" the United States delegation raised were the same ones that had "amplified" distrust and the risk of war with past administrations, resulting in previous talks ending in failure.

The regime's belief that the weapons are needed to deter a United States attack dates back almost 70 years to the still-unresolved Korean War, and will take more than a handshake to dispel. "Today we have a strong relationship", Pompeo said on Twitter. -South Korean military exercises. North Korea, in its post-Pompeo talks statement, played down the importance of the move, describing it as a "highly reversible step which can be resumed anytime at any moment as all of its military force remains intact in its previously held positions". Pompeo spoke with Trump, Bolton and White House chief of staff John Kelly on Saturday before his second round of meetings with Kim Yong Chol. "I am determined to achieve the commitment that President Trump made, and I'm counting on chairman Kim to be determined to follow through on the commitment that he made".

His optimism, however, came in marked contrast to how the North perceived the talks, which had been the highest-level negotiations since the June 12 summit.

"Particularly, they have suggested that they are disappointed by the U.S. insistence on focusing on the denuclearisation plans over what they described as big-picture issues", she said.

South Korea's so-called peace stocks - a group of companies that stand to benefit from increased economic ties with North Korea - slumped on Monday.

US Senator Lindsey Graham said on Sunday: "I see China's hands all over this".

So, if I were President Trump, I would not let China use North Korea to back me off of the trade dispute. "The U.S. should make a serious consideration of whether the toleration of the headwind against the wills of the two top leaders would meet the aspirations and expectations of the world people as well as the interests of its country", the statement concluded.

The president sought to address growing doubts that Pyongyang is willing to take concrete steps toward dismantling its nuclear arsenal, the subject of last month's historic summit between Trump and Kim. During the trilateral meeting in Tokyo, Kono thanked Pompeo for that, a senior Foreign Ministry official said later on Sunday.

"Across the range of weapons and missiles, it's a broad definition of denuclearisation, and the North Koreans understand that and have not challenged that", he said.

There was no immediate explanation of what needed to be clarified, but the two sides have been struggling to specify what exactly "denuclearisation" would entail and how it could be verified to the satisfaction of the United States.

KCNA said Pyongyang had offered to discuss declaring a formal end to the war to mark next month's anniversary of the armistice. It said the USA side had shown little interest, giving "certain conditions and excuses".
