Boris Johnson's resignation a selfish act, says Guto Bebb

Johnson said that at a meeting of the cabinet to decide the plan on Friday, he had accepted that "my side of the argument were too few to prevail".

The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, has already written to Mr Johnson and Mr Davis to thank them and has also written to the new Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab.

In his resignation letter, Mr Johnson did not back Mrs May to stay on as Prime Minister, while Mr Davis said she should.

"I was elected to represent my constituents and the Prime Minister'S team needs to be aware that backbench MPs won't sit idly by and allow a so-called "soft Brexit" with us being half-in, half-out", Andrea Jenkyns wrote in The Daily Telegraph.

Some Conservative Party lawmakers warned they would not tolerate a betrayal of Brexit.

But the chaos surrounding the government will not die down any time soon-the contingent supporting a hard Brexit is more angry than ever.

However, prominent Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg, the chairman of the European Research Group of Eurosceptic backbenchers, said he had not submitted a letter of no confidence and expected Mrs May to remain at least until the official date of Brexit in March 2019.

SpaceIL to launch unmanned Moon probe in December

Brussels has not yet made clear how the EU27 will respond to the Chequers deal, which the government believes represents an "evolution" of its negotiating strategy.

This is because, even though these hardliners don't yet have the 48 signatures needed to call a vote on her leadership (and certainly not the 159 needed to actually oust her), May's cobbled-together majority in the House of Commons is so slim that even a handful of them could derail the process.

And if the prime minister does indeed survive, what then? Donald Trump's arrival in the United Kingdom towards the end of the week is also critical - it will be a further coup if she can demonstrate that she can achieve something from her meeting with the U.S. president on trade or on security. He has served as health secretary since 2012.

Gove's reputation within the Tory party was in tatters after he broke with Boris Johnson in 2016 and ran for the leadership himself: he now has the opportunity to show he can be loyal and perhaps earn himself a promotion to higher office. Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

In June this year he urged Mrs May to deliver a "full British Brexit", and not something that was "half-hearted".

Now, Downing Street believes that the hot water the prime minister is in today will shock European Union leaders into realising they need to start compromising themselves - not just perpetually demanding capitulations on the UK's red lines.

"Politicians come and go but the problems they have created for people remain", said Mr Tusk.
