  • Froome makes up for lost time

The 27-year-old Kiwi helped propel BMC Racing to a famous victory in the stage three team time trial on Monday (Tuesday NZT), completing the 35.5km course in 38min 46sec, four seconds ahead of Team Sky.

The result saw Greg Van Avermaet take the yellow jersey, while BMC Racing leader Richie Porte, who lost 51 seconds on the opening stage, is now up to 14th on the general classification.

Team Sky (38:50) were second fastest to help four-time victor Froome climb the standings, with Quick-Step Floors another three seconds adrift in third.

But Sky will be happy to see many of Froome's rivals lose significant time.

It also put American teammate Tejay van Garderen in second place at the same time.

So seconds gained and lost for the GC riders starting early, but the big questions remained: would BMC's time still be the fastest at the end, and who would be in yellow on the podium?

"There was way too much wind for me", said the slightly-built Porte.

Australian Richie Porte, who had also lost 51 seconds in the first stage after being delayed behind a pile-up, benefited from his BMC team's performance to move up to 14th, four seconds ahead of Froome.

The three-time defending world champion took the overall lead of the Tour on Sunday after he bettered about a dozen other sprinters to win Stage 2.

Among the top contenders, last year's runner-up Rigoberto Uran of Colombia is 10th, 35 seconds behind.

Peter Sagan, in the yellow jersey, suffered on the road and lost the wheels of his Bora-hansgrohe team-mates, meaning Van Avermaet now leads overall.

And though Sky missed out on victory - and a chance to put Geraint Thomas in the yellow jersey - Froome was able to eradicate the deficit to numerous other contenders.

Thomas, who wore yellow for four days previous year, said that he was not bothered by the... "It's a long way to go, we still have six more hectic days and then we have also got the Alps and the Pyrenees".

Among the big losers today were Nairo Quintana, whose Movistar team came home 53 seconds down on BMC Racing, Bahrain-Merida with 2014 Tour de France victor Vincenzo Nibali, 1 minute and 6 seconds down, and Romain Bardet's AG2R-La Mondiale, who came home 1 minute 15 seconds behind the day's victor.

Tomorrow the Tour de France 204-kilometre sprint stage with the only mountain of the fourth category, which the participants of the race will overcome 60 kilometers from the finish.
