The photographs showed the words Martin's Air Charter on the side of the plane, and it was reportedly a vintage aircraft being used in a special test flight.

Eyewitnesses described seeing the plane attempt to veer toward Wonderboom airport, then hearing an explosion.

Spokesperson Ernie McCarthy confirmed the incident and that Emer-G-Med paramedics were attending to the scene.

"I can only confirm that yes we do have a plane that crashed... on the Moloto Road", local government emergency services spokesman Johan Pieterse told AFP.

"There was one fatality in the cockpit, we are not sure if it's the pilot or the engineer". Their injuries range from minor to critical.

A plane has crashed near the Wonderboom airport in Pretoria, South Africa.

The Aviodrome aerospace theme park in the Netherlands said on its Facebook page that it was "hugely shocked" by the crash.

It had been due to fly to Aviodrome via east Africa, through Egypt, Croatia, Austria to the Netherlands.

A charter aircraft crashed in Kameeldrift on Tuesday afternoon. It had just been refurbished for 350,000 euros ($410,000) at Wonderboom.

The Civil Aviation Authority is expected to start an investigation into the crash as soon as all patients have been cleared from the scene.
