Mr Howitt says he doesn't want to see a ban on plastic straws put in place in New Zealand, but would rather see consumers refusing to use them.

Starbucks is going strawless.

Starbucks' new strawless lid, which is replacing all single-use straws by 2020. Certain beverages will come equipped with a strawless lid, a kind of elevated sippy cup, and other drinks will come with paper or compostable plastic straws.

Global coffee giant Starbucks will eliminate all plastic straws from its 28,000 stores by 2020, becoming the latest corporate giant to take steps to combat pollution from disposable plastic. Straws add up to only about 2,000 tons of the almost 9m tons of plastic waste that hits waters each year.

While plastic pollution has always been the target of environmental groups, the impact of straws on marine life has recently moved to the centre of plastic-banning efforts.

After this lid becomes standard for all cold drinks in Seattle and Vancouver, Starbucks will launch a global rollout of the strawless lid beginning in France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

In order to render plastic straws needless, Starbucks will be transitioning from the regular flat plastic lids to a new kind of lid with a raised lip to drink from, the company shared in a news release.

Before plastic straws became the standard, paper straws were the most widely used.

In a similar move, the city of St. Petersburg launched a campaign in April called "No Straws St. Pete" to convince businesses and residents to curb their usage of straws. Starbucks has already committed itself to the trendy cause, having pledged $10 million to help create recyclable cups for its hot drinks, but it is now moving further along in its efforts to aid the environment by choosing to ditch plastic straws. The potential harm of ocean waste, particularly from plastic straws, drew widespread attention after a 2015 YouTube video of a sea turtle with a straw up its nostril went viral. "We hope others will follow in [Starbucks'] footsteps". "With eight million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we can not afford to let industry sit on the sidelines", he continued.

Starbucks said that it is the largest food and beverage retailer to have promised to get rid of plastic straws.
