‘The English Patient’ voted best Man Booker winner

The English Patient, by Sri Lankan-born Canadian literary icon Michael Ondaatje, has won the Golden Man Booker Prize.

The Golden Man Booker, the one-off award marking the Man Booker Prize's 50thanniversary celebrations, was chosen by the public and revealed on Sunday.

Adapted into a multiple Oscar-winning film starring Ralph Fiennes as the desert explorer Làszlò Almàsy, Juliette Binoche as his nurse Hana and Kristin Scott Thomas as the married Katharine Clifton, The English Patient was one of the best-known books on the shortlist.

A panel of judges read all 52 former winners of the award, with each assigned a decade from the Booker's history.

The 50th anniversary of the prize is being magnified globally with Man Booker author events at worldwide literary festivals across the world.

The 1970s finalist was "In a Free State" by Trinidad-born V.S. Naipaul, while "Moon Tiger" by British writer Penelope Lively was the 1980s contender.

Ondaatje accepted his award, and then was quoted as saying: "Not for a second do I believe this is the best book on the list - or any other list that could have been put together of Booker novels".

The novel, a work of historical fiction that takes place in Italy during the Second World War, originally won the prestigious English-language literary prize in 1992 as well as the Governor General's Literary Award.

The Golden Booker was held in 2018 to mark 50 successful years of the much coveted literary prize.

Booker Prize Foundation chair Baroness Helena Kennedy said the story was "a compelling work of fiction".
