  • Deadly bacteria fears: Supermarkets recall frozen vegetables

Woolworths has recalled its Savory Rice Mix product after one of its suppliers was identified as a likely source of Listeria.

The department said everyone should follow the recall advice issued on Monday by Food Safety Australia New Zealand.

The outbreak is extremely serious, with nine suspected deaths from listeria bacteria in frozen vegetables reported so far across Europe.

Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Waitrose have recalled frozen vegetable packages, including packets of sweetcorn and mixed vegetables, because they could contain listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis.

The factory supplies sweetcorn used in Woolworths' rice mix.

He said cooking the vegetables should kill the bacteria, but warned against eating undefrosted or undercooked frozen vegetables.

The Frozen Savoury Rice Mix product is uncooked and frozen and so requires cooking before consumption.

Australia has become caught up in a European food scare, with supermarkets across the country recalling bags of frozen vegetables over fears they may contain a deadly bacteria.

Earlier this year six people sadly died, in New South Wales and Victoria, after consuming contaminated rockmelon, with the outbreak being traced back to Rombola Family Farms in the Riverina region.

The outbreak was linked to Enterprise facilities in Polokwane and Germiston which produced cold meats, including Woolworths' beloved Salami sticks.

It has symptoms that are similar to flu, including high temperature, muscle ache, sickness and diarrhoea. "We have very strict protocols in place as part of our standard food safety management process".

"We are voluntarily recalling this product as a precautionary measure, on the global instruction of the Hungarian Food Safety Agency".
