  • YouTube launches $25m crackdown on 'fake news' videos

Starting [Monday], users will begin seeing information from third parties, including Wikipedia and Encyclopædia Britannica, alongside videos on a small number of well-established historical and scientific topics that have often been subject to misinformation, like the moon landing and the Oklahoma City Bombing.

YouTube has a long way to go in its battle against fake news and conspiracies, its executives acknowledged.

YouTube's new news format is due to be rolled out in coming weeks, according to post on the company's blog, signed by Neal Mohan, the company's chief product officer, and Robert Kyncl, chief business officer.

Now YouTube says it's taking action against this kind of exploitation of breaking news situations.

YouTube also promises to provide grants to news organizations, on an application basis, "across approximately 20 global markets to support news organizations in building sustainable video operations".

As well as the investment, which will be partly used to fund a working group to spearhead news product features, the company is changing how its site works to "make authoritative sources readily accessible".

This will include short previews of news articles in YouTube search results on key breaking stories.

In addition, it will create new features in the U.S.to boost the distribution of local news.

In the U.S., the service will be trialing a short preview of verified news articles in the initial hours of news stories breaking, so that you can quickly learn the context behind the event and click through for more detailed information. These tests are being run in 25 markets across the USA and Google says that local news has gotten "strong engagement" so far.

The Breaking News "shelf" on the YouTube home page will show video from news sources about an event that has just occurred (check out the image at the top of this article).

YouTube also said it's committed to hiring more people who will directly work with news organizations, and it's convening a working group of representatives from news organizations to help surface issues and develop features (Vox Media, Brazil's Jovem Pan, and India Today are cited as members of the group).

As part of YouTube's recent initiative, the company pledged $25 million to support journalism expertise and publishers on the platform.

That includes videos related to news events, which is why Google has announced an effort to help users find quality, authoritative videos on news.

The "Top News" and "Breaking News" features have been launched in 17 countries, including in India. Over the coming months, that number will double.
