  • Army vet and wife consider divorce to afford daughter's health care

An Army veteran and his wife are considering a divorce - just so that they can afford health care for their disabled daughter, according to a report. Jake and Maria Grey have been married for nine years, and their 6-year-old daughter Brighton has Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome. But they're considering a divorce, for the sake of one of their kids. Developmentally still a newborn, Brighton requires around-the-clock attention.

Because Jake, an Army veteran, makes $40,000 a year, the family doesn't qualify for Medicaid. They also told the news outlet that they are on the waiting list for state assistance, but that their number is 59,979.

"We're No. 60,000", Maria said. By divorcing, Maria would become a single, jobless mother of two and would qualify for Medicaid to help with their finances immediately.

'We promised each other and to her that we would do whatever we could do to make her life - however long she is going to be with us - as good as possible, ' Maria said, adding that they 'wouldn't have made it this far without each other'.

"We shouldn't have to make that sacrifice to get our child Medicaid", Grey said. "It's morally wrong, I feel like, and I think it's conflicting for me too, because I feel like what's happening to us is morally wrong", Jake said. "We've done everything we can do to try to keep her afloat, and we're going to reach a point where we can't do it and we won't have another option".

The couple said they have heard of other families in the same heartbreaking dilemma. "We don't want a GoFundMe - we don't want any of that", Maria said. They say they'll do whatever necessary to help their daughter. "We're lucky to have that and I wouldn't change that for anything".
