  • US Judge Brett Kavanaugh speaks after being nominated by US President Donald Trump

Schumer is talking a good game on blocking Kavanaugh now. He says that without Kennedy, the Supreme Court has strong left and strong right positions, but no one in the middle. Plus, Flake's predecessor in the Senate, Jon Kyl, will be guiding Kavanaugh through the confirmation process.

Heller is running for reelection in a state Hillary Clinton won.

Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, an umbrella coalition of more than 200 civil rights organisations in the USA, likened Kavanaugh to Trump, a property tycoon, saying "he would protect the rights of the wealthy and powerful over the rights of all". Other senators on this list declined that invite.

"We know what we are getting with judge Kavanaugh", Graham added.

Despite Kavanaugh's qualifications, some Democrats have already expressed opposition. Mitch McConnell and his other cronies.

"Tonight's announcement is only a first step", Jones said in Twitter message on Tuesday. "You can challenge Judge Kavanaugh on his legal reasoning". "I will be diligent in measuring the record and in undertaking an independent review".

The Affordable Care Act is "wildly popular and necessary in the reddest of states", said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of NY, in an interview Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe".

"With his pick of Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump has done everything in his power to push the Supreme Court into the world of ultra-conservatism", said Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum. In that event, a few Democrats will probably break ranks and support the nominee in order to enhance their re-election prospects.

Some conservative critics faulted Kavanaugh for not taking up the merits of the dispute and declaring the ACA unconstitutional.

I looks to me like Manchin will do so unless something is discovered that causes one or two Republican Senators to defect. I suspect the answer depends on how many Republican Senators will.

North Korea's Ri Su Yong visits Moscow
Trump did not give any sense of when he might give the CD to Kim. "Vladimir Putin must be licking his chops". Pompeo did not meet with Kim during the trip, his third to North Korea.

"With a Justice Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, we could see reversals of hard-won gains securing equal opportunity in education, employment and housing", the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) said in a statement. Trump ended up picking a former clerk of Kennedy's.

But: Heitkamp remained notably noncommittal after Trump picked Kavanaugh.

"I don't think that's going to happen", she said.

"Because of Donald Trump's openly Islamophobic, white supremacist and racist views and policies targeting minority and immigrant communities, it is incumbent upon the Senate to question Mr Kavanaugh about his opinions on the protection of civil rights, religious freedom and the rights of immigrants", he said. If he gets a "no" vote from all Democrats, he loses seats.

But: Donnelly has also demonstrated a willingness to vote against Trump on big votes, like the tax bill.

That insider status can help Kavanaugh win over the Washington elite and secure enough Senate votes to avoid an embarrassing loss for Trump.

As soon as it was announced Kennedy would retire, Liberal groups were gearing up to protect Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that upheld abortion rights, from being overturned. Plus, Kavanaugh has a conservative record on abortion, but he has also testified to the Senate in the past that he would respect Roe. Kavanaugh takes a high-altitude approach, espousing broad constitutional principles.

While Democrats tried to paint Kavanaugh as an extremist, Republicans said he was the type of moderate Bush might have appointed.

Collins is the likeliest to cross party lines. To Democrats, he's a threat to women's reproductive rights and the Obama health care program.

The case would then go to the Supreme Court.
