Health Canada recalls heart drug due to contamination with possible carcinogen

12 Juillet, 2018, 07:41 | Auteur: Yves Courtet

"An impurity, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), was found in the valsartan used in these products", Health Canada said in a news release on Monday.

Swiss multinational pharmaceutical compaany Novartis informed the ministry that their products containing Valsartan - Diovan, Co-Diovan Entresto and Exforge - are not impacted because these products do not contain the active ingredient from an external supplier.

Health Canada indicated it is monitoring the companies' recalls and suggests people taking medicine with valsartan should keep doing so unless their doctor or pharmacist tells them to stop.

There is no acute health threat to patients using the affected medication containing valsartan. "NDMA is a potential human carcinogen, which means that it could cause cancer with long-term exposure".

But the agency also says patients taking the drug should check with their pharmacist to learn if their medicine is being recalled.

As a precautionary measure, the valsartan-containing medications are recalled on a pharmacy level.

Valsartan should continue to be taken unless users have alternative medicine available, the Public Health Superintendence said today.
