India Begin England Tour With A Fine Win In T20I Series

  • Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant century as India clinched the three-match T20 series against England

England batsman Joe Root feels India present a different challenge than their recent opponents including Australia and the home team will have to be at the top of its game to beat the Virat Kohli-led outfit in the three-match ODI series beginning on Thursday.

Root "fully understood" the decision to leave him out in Bristol, but admitted his lack of opportunities to play T20 cricket has been "difficult". After a good show in the T20Is against Ireland and England, India would now like to take the same kind of form into the 50 overs format of the game.

Talking about missing out on playing in the IPL, Root said, "All the domestic tournaments around the world, they have to fit around playing for England".

Apart from gauging the English conditions, India would also like to get to the Top Spot in ODI Rankings which would be an added incentive for them to perform in the series.

Whether Root can keep scoring white-ball...

Post the Champions Trophy, starting from June previous year, India have played 27 ODIs against West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, both at home and away and at least one wrist spinner has featured in all these games. I'm hungry to do so. That's where I've been fairly consistent over the last couple of years. It's been slightly frustrating on occasions [this summer] but when you win 5-0 against Australia you've got no complaints.

"I've managed to get big wickets so I'm hoping a huge player like Kohli will focus me again and I can try to get him out".

He will continue to look for opportunities to play in domestic competitions around the world - and given England's schedule, a stint in the Big Bash could be an option this winter - but only if they do not impact on his England duties with the 2019 World Cup and Test captaincy his current priorities. "It's hard because of the limited opportunities I've had to play T20 cricket, but the thing that has always been at the forefront of my mind is that playing for England comes first". "I know it was a very different side they played against but it is a really good marker to see where we are", said Root on Wednesday. "We've played some really strong cricket in the one-day format for a while now and India are right up there as one of the best sides in the world", he added.
