  • Kavanaugh begins Senate charm offensive as Democrats roll out opposition strategy

President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh, 53, on Monday, making his second high court pick in as many years.

"What their plans are down the road is their business, but you know this is an opportunity for them both to raise their profile, but also really help win this issue for Democrats, which is important both substantively and politically", said Brad Woodhouse, campaign director of Protect Our Care, which is fighting the Kavanaugh nomination.

At the announcement, Kavanaugh stood with his wife and two daughters and said he was "humbled" by the nomination.

He talked about how his mother teaching in Washington D.C. public schools taught him the importance of equality and diversity.

He also has a bad record on environmental law, doesn't support labor rights, disapproves of agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and opposes affirmative action.

Graham has said he believes that Kavanaugh will be appointed and receive bipartisan support.

As a federal judge, he noted how he can hire three clerks a year, and that a lot of them have been women.

Kavanaugh even name dropped Justice Elena Kagan in his remarks. Kavanaugh, who is known to be a Nationals fan, declined to comment.

Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, an umbrella coalition of more than 200 civil rights organisations in the U.S., likened Kavanaugh to Trump, a property tycoon, saying "he would protect the rights of the wealthy and powerful over the rights of all". He wrote that the best mechanism for checking a president's wrongdoing was through the impeachment process.

Covington said Kavanaugh's previous writings on indictments of sitting presidents will be of particular interest to lawmakers.

That hasn't stopped Trump and others from predicting more openings.

Robert Mueller reportedly is among those who believes a president can not be indicted when in office.

"This, of course, is another peculiarity of the Trump presidency: blockbuster news has a way of popping out of nowhere and dominating the conversation in ways that no one expected". And he speaks from experience: Kavanaugh clerked for Kenneth Starr, the special counsel who investigated President Bill Clinton. He was more empathetic to how a prosecution could interfere with presidential duties.

"Trump has been unequivocal that he intends to appoint a justice who will overturn Roe v wade", said Clarke.

It appears that if confirmed, Kavanaugh would be the least wealthy justice. So, moving the median to the right will shift the ideological position of the majority coalition on many cases.

If you're not sure how you feel about Kavanaugh and his record yet, that's okay!

Not a low-energy Bush staffer.

Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the national Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, meanwhile accused the Trump administration of being relentless in its efforts to reverse civil rights legislations that afforded protection to women. But that didn't stop him from nominating Bush staffer Kavanaugh.

Leonard Leo, Vice President of the Federalist Society, has been called the puppeteer behind Trump's court choices, but that narrative overlooks the influence of McGahn, also a Federalist Society member.

Davidson College Associate Professor Andrew O'Geen is an expert on the dynamics of the Supreme Court, including the cooperative behavior of justices, the judicial review of federal laws and the dynamics of the Court's issue agenda.

Schumer is talking a good game on blocking Kavanaugh now. Republicans, meanwhile, hope centrist Democrats running for re-election in conservative-leaning states will back Kavanaugh.

Democrats, on the other hand have consistently argued that the electorate should have their say in the November midterms before a decision is made.
