President Trump Says Pfizer Has Agreed to Reverse Drug 'Price Hikes'

The company, in a statement, said the price increases would effectively be postponed at least until the beginning of 2019 in order "to give the president an opportunity to work on his blueprint to strengthen the healthcare system and provide more access to patients".

President Donald Trump criticized Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies for raising prices in a tweet Monday afternoon, vowing that the government would respond. The pharmaceutical giant said the drugs will return to their pre-July 1 prices "as soon as technically possible" and stay in place until either the end of the year or until elements of the Trump-backed health care blueprint go into effect. "And there's very little bidding on drugs", Trump said during an event at Trump Tower in NY. "In addition, the price declines the company took as of July 1 will remain in effect". "Pfizer is rolling back price hikes, so American patients don't pay more", Trump wrote on Twitter.

If you are serious about this issue, tell your Republican pals in Congress to pass bills requiring Medicare to negotiate drug prices and enabling the importation of safe, low-priced drugs from Canada and other countries.

Although many drug makers traditionally raise prices mid-year, Pfizer stood out last week for two reasons - the price hikes were for dozens of drugs and the actual increases were particularly large. While prices on many drugs were increased, there were also decreases on a few of their products.

Pfizer raised list prices on around 40 medicines earlier this month.

Trump, a longtime critic of rising drug prices, has previously suggested the government negotiate drug prices and allow the importing of prescription drugs from overseas-both moves that would hurt the pharmaceutical companies at home.

The administration in May introduced a blueprint aimed at reducing drug prices.

Trump in May released a 44-page document that contained a list of ideas on ways to lower drug prices, but it did not contain any concrete actions that the White House would pursue. Trump promised companies would be announcing "massive, voluntary" price drops within two weeks.
