Roger Federer Bows Out Of Wimbledon In Thrilling Circumstances

South Africa's Kevin Anderson has beaten defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in five gruelling sets.

It was a match Federer could, probably should, have won and yet he will now leave here wondering - probably like everyone else - how many more chances he will get to add to his eight Wimbledon titles.

Tendulkar then invited Federer to "exchange notes" after the tournament's end, which the eight-time Wimbledon champion courteously accepted.

Federer wasted a match point during the 2-6, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11, match.

Anderson, last year's runner-up at the U.S. Open in his best finish at a Grand Slam, clinched the third set with an ace against Federer. "By the end I thought I did a great job".

Anderson, a three-time All-American at IL, moves onto the semifinals of Wimbledon for the first time in his career.

Anderson then held the 24th game to clinch one of tennis' most famous victories. The Swiss champion hadn't been assigned any court here except Center Court since 2015.

Anderson hit 13 winners and just four unforced errors in the fourth set as he claimed the only break to force a decider. After Anderson calmed down and lost a pretty tight second set, Federer's forehand started going wayward.

Emboldened by the development, Anderson went on all-out attack.

But Federer offered a contrasting view in his media conference following a 6-0 7-5 6-4 fourth-round win over Adrian Mannarino on Monday. Might take me half an hour.

Anderson trails Isner 3-8 in career meetings. There was no drop-off in intensity; no letdown in the quality of his play.

Anderson struggled to make any impression on Federer's serve as the Swiss' guile saw him dominate, breaking for a second time when a deep forehand could only be returned long by the South African. However, he fell once, this time in a 7-6 tiebreaker, to fall behind two sets to none.

With fifth-set tiebreakers not permitted at Wimbledon, they played on - each point heavy with implications.

But he found himself in even more unfamiliar territory with an inspired Anderson's relentless, thudding serve eventually overpowering the 20-time grand slam victor. In all, the two battled it out for over four hours.

Anderson, who is now 32, has stormed onto the scene in the past 10 months.

Snacks during the changeovers kept them going, but nothing seemed capable of separating them - at least until Federer appeared distracted by a midpoint shout from the crowd and a plane flying overhead while serving at 11-11.

And he closed, fittingly, on a service victor.

"You are reluctant to write Roger off - just the way that he moves around the court and he stays injury free", said the Australian, who won the title in 1987.

Anderson will now move into his first semi-finals at the tournament; taking on the victor of John Isner and Milos Raonic for a place in a final against what may be Rafa Nadal or Novak Djokovic.
