Thailand cave rescue: First pics of boys in hospital

The Director of Chiang Rai Hospital said that the boys will need to remain hospitalised for seven to 10 days and then another month of home recovery.

This prompted an worldwide rescue effort, with volunteers from all over the world lending their resources to retrieve the boys one by one.

Thongchai said the soccer teammates are in a "very good mental state" and are showing no signs of stress.

The saga started on June 23 when the players walked into the Tham Luang cave complex after football practice and were trapped when monsoon flooding blocked their exit.

The three Royal Thai Navy SEAL divers and medics who stayed in the cave with the boys and coach since they were located on July 2.

Dutch media rejoiced on Tuesday afternoon as a Thai children's football team and their coach were all safely rescued from a flooded cave complex in Northern Thailand. Lit by several beams of white light, the divers in wet suits and helmets are seen submerging themselves in the water and grabbing on to a metal dive line used to guide them through the winding channels of the six-mile cave.

The rescue process started at 10am local time on Sunday and involved 13 global divers and five Thai navy seals, who were referred to as "an all-star team" by NarongsakOsatanakorn, who is the Governor of Chiang Rai province and head of the joint command centre coordinating the rescue. "I'm happy that the boys are out too", said Khamluh Guntawong, the grandfather of team coach Ekkapol Chantawong.
