  • Wayne Pivac will take over after the 2019 World Cup

New Zealander Wayne Pivac will take over from Warren Gatland as Wales head coach at the conclusion of the 2019 World Cup.

New Zealander Pivac has been the Scarlets' boss since 2014, masterminding a Guinness Pro12 title past year and securing passage into the semi-finals of the Champions Cup.

Gatland will have been in charge for 12 years when he steps down in December 2019, making him the longest-serving Wales coach ever.

Martyn Phillips, chief executive of the WRU, said that there should be no complaints after a rigorous selection process which took two years to complete.

Wayne Pivac will be the next Wales coach.

"Additionally, I'm determined to ensure that Wayne is given the best possible opportunity to succeed in this job when he starts after the World Cup and I will do everything I can to help him".

If he is appointed, it will be a return to worldwide coaching for Pivac, who was Fiji boss for three years from 2004-2007.

'It's both a huge honour and a privilege to have been asked to be the next Wales coach, ' Pivac said.

The Kiwi has vast experience coaching all over the world, from 2004 to 2007 he was head coach of Fiji, winning the Pacific Tri-Nations in his first year at the helm before helping coach the Fijian Sevens to the 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens title. He led the British and Irish Lions to a series win in Australia in 2013 and drew the 2017 series with the All Blacks.

The 54-year-old's best showing at a World Cup was in an unlucky 9-8 loss to France in the 2011 semi-finals, having played most of the match with 14 players after captain Sam Warburton was sent off in the 19th minute.
