Ireland's Dan Martin attacked to claim stage victory on the steep finish to Mûr-de-Bretagne in the sixth stage of the 2018 Tour de France.

Philippe Gilbert of Quick Step Floors and Van Avermaet were among those prominent at the front of the bunch on the final climb, as was Thomas as well as Mitchelton-Scott's Adam Yates, but none had an answer when Martin - second here the last time the race visited in 2015 - made his move. He finished ahead of a hard-charging Pierre LaTour (AG2R La Mondiale) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar). Martin's timing was perfectly judged and he was able to hold onto until he crossed the line.

"This is such an incredible feeling for me after so many second places at the Tour since my last one victory in the Grande Boucle", said Martin. "I thought, why not have a try? It makes this Tour de France a success for us already, and anything else is a bonus".

The pair are 13th and 14th, one minute two seconds behind yellow jersey Greg van Avermaet, and one second ahead of Dumoulin.

Tom Dumoulin, victor of the 2017 Giro D'Italia, suffered badly following a mechanical issue with only 5km to go, dropping 40 seconds on the leaders.

A breakaway group of five riders - Laurent Pichon (Fortuneo-Samsic), Anthony Turgis (Cofidis), Dion Smith (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Damien Gaudin and Fabien Grellier (both Direct Energie) - hit the front from the off and built a gap of nearly seven minutes before it stabalised.

Will Smith's #DoTheShiggy just destroyed the #InMyFeelingsChallenge
Smith, 49, did the routine on top of a bridge in Budapest - which is why he says his moves are "stiff". Hey, sometimes when a good Drake jam comes around. you just gotta get shiggy with it.

While they fought back to join the chase group, a third group led by Lotto and their rider Primoz Roglic struggled to stay in touch.

Jack Bauer of team Mitchelton-Scott finished the climb behind Skujins but then pushed on to build a gap of 20 seconds with 12 km remaining.

The likes of Vincenzo Nibali, Richie Porte, Geraint Thomas, Nairo Quintana, Mikel Landa and even Peter Sagan were part of the group - although defending champion Chris Froome (Team Sky) found himself on the other side of a slight split to concede five seconds to many of his GC rivals, while Colombian Rigoberto Uran (EF Education First-Drapac) was a further three seconds in arrears.

Ireland's Daniel Martin is all smiles as he takes out stage six of the Tour de France.

"(Porte) can be confident after this climb, " Van Avermaet said.
