  • Under things he hates Garrett’s first entry in the obituary is “dirty stinking cancer,”

A unique memorial service set for 5-year-old Garrett Matthias of central Iowa is matched only by the one-of-a-kind obituary the preschooler had a hand in authoring and that is now garnering national attention.

"Funerals are sad", he said. "I'm going to have bouncy houses at mine", Emilie recalled.

The obit was compiled by his parents, Emilie and Ryan Matthias, who began asking Garrett questions about such adult topics as funeral and burial preferences when they learned from doctors last month that his cancer was terminal.

He then moves on to list his favorite superheroes ("Batman... and Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, and Cyborg"), his favorite people (various family members including, among others, "stinky Uncle Andy"), the things he loves most, and the things he hates ("pants" and "dirty stupid cancer" among them). It also lays out what he meant to do once he died.

Asked about death, Garrett responded he was "going to be a gorilla and throw poo at Daddy!"

Emilie and Ryan Matthias don't quite know how they'll pull that off yet. Garrett's final signoff on the obituary: "See ya later, suckas!"

"That's him speaking. Those are his words verbatim", Garrett's father, Ryan Matthias, told WHO-TV. "When I read it, I was thinking 'Wow, sounds like Garrett just yapping at me, '" Ryan said.

Along with their son's candid answers, Emilie and Ryan Matthias included in Garrett's obituary a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped their son during his hard battle with cancer. "During that time he never lost his sense of humor and loved to tease the doctors and the nurses".

First, he told his parents he wanted to be "burned" - or cremated - like when superhero Thor's mom, Odin, was burned in an Asgardian ceremony, according to his obituary.

"We really tried to use his words, and the way that he talked", Emilie told the Register. "Garrett was a very unique individual". "But we had a lot of conversations around, 'When I die, I want to do this'". He was diagnosed with cancer nine months ago and died last Friday.

Under his dislikes Garrett listed needles, trousers and his "stupid dirty cancer", among other things.

A celebration of life to honor Garrett's wishes will take place on Saturday, July 14th from 5 p.m. - 11 p.m.at 2377 132 Court in Van Meter. "The reality for Garrett and so many other children is pediatric cancer is an ugly, nasty beast that leaves a path of destruction".

"I want to be burned (like when Thor's Mommy died) and made into a tree so I can live in it when I'm a gorilla". He used whoopy cushions and snuck clothes pins on their clothes and even "hazed" interns and new doctors. "We will fight for a cure until no other kids are robbed of their childhood, no other siblings lose their best friends, and no other parents have to bury their babies".
