Had Damaging Information On Donald Trump, Says FBI Agent Peter Strzok

"The moment special counsel Bob Mueller found out about Peter Strzok's text and emails he kicked him off of the investigation", said House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, a South Carolina Republican. The talk show host let highlights of the Capitol Hill testimony provide the jokes for him.

In breaking his months-long silence, Strzok vigorously defended his handling of two hugely sensitive investigations in which he played a leading role: inquiries into Hillary Clinton's email use and possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. Chief among those skeptics was Rep. Louie Gohmert, the controversial Texas firebrand, who accused Strzok of lying to lawmakers.

Democrats loudly objected to Goodlatte's attempts to force Strzok to answer Gowdy's first question about how many witnesses were interviewed in the opening days of Russian Federation probe.

Ultimately Strzok responded to a question from Gowdy about the early portion of the Russian Federation investigation by defending his own work and the work of the FBI.

"You've embarrassed them, you've embarrassed yourself and I can't help but wonder when I see you there looking with a little smirk, how many times did you look so innocent into your wife's eyes and lie to her about Lisa Page", Gohmert said.

Trump, who divorced his first wife to marry the woman with whom he was having an affair, is involved in a lawsuit with an adult-film star with whom he also reportedly had an affair around the time his third wife gave birth to his youngest child.

Strzok replied that Trump won't.

Strzok shot back, saying the question revealed more about Gohmert's character than his own.

Mueller reassigned Strzok after the Justice Department discovered highly political text messages that he sent Page during the 2016 election cycle.

He said in his opening statement that his work has never been tainted by politics and the intense scrutiny he faces represents "just another victory notch in [Russian President Vladimir] Putin's belt".

"In the majority's view, we do not have time to conduct oversight on nearly any national security issue - but we have hours on end to discuss Mr. Strzok's extramarital affair", Nadler said.

Strzok said under aggressive questioning that a much-discussed August 2016 text in which he vowed "we'll stop" a Trump candidacy followed Trump's denigration of the family of a dead USA service member.

"This investigation is a political charade - a platform to elevate far-right conspiracy theories and undermine the special counsel's ongoing criminal investigation of the President and his campaign aides", Nadler and Cummings said in that statement.

Strzok called it "horrible and disgusting behaviour", and said he was stating his opinion the electorate would "stop" a candidate like that. He said Strzok's texts were "the ideal foil" for Republicans.

FBI Director Chris Wray says employees who were singled out for criticism in the report have been referred to internal disciplinary officials.

Republicans, on the other hand, peppered Strzok with questions and expressed outrage that's been building for months.
