Jared Kushner Isn’t Cleared To See Most Sensitive Government Information

  • White House senior adviser Jared Kushner listens as President Donald Trump answers questions at a news conference in Bedminster N.J. A federal lawsuit filed Wednesday

For the first year of the Trump administration, Kushner had almost blanket access to highly classified intelligence, even as he held an interim security clearance and awaited the completion of his background investigation.

President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, does not have a high-enough security clearance level to gain access to some of the most sensitive US government secrets, the Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing two people familiar with his access. Soon after Trump and Kushner moved in, hundreds of LGBTQ protestors gathered outside of their home in a "dance party" protest to "send the clear message that our climate and our communities matter", according to a Facebook page titled "Queer Dance Party for Climate Justice at Ivanka Trump's House!"

The permanent security clearance that was subsequently granted in May was only for information classified as "top secret", according to the officials cited by the Post.

In May, Kushner's supporters pointed to his ability to gain a permanent high-level security clearance as a sign that he faces no legal jeopardy from the probe led by Mueller.

Kushner attorney Abbe Lowell declined to confirm Kushner's current clearance level.

Asked about the Post story, White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters told Reuters the White House did not comment on security clearances.

"After a review done in the normal course by career officials, Mr. Kushner was given his permanent White House clearances in May, and has access to all the materials and information he needs to do the domestic and worldwide work the president has asked him to do", Lowell said.

Theology teacher Riley Temple said that neighbors normally give Ivanka and Kushner their privacy, but made a decision to protest in light of recent events. Experts told the Post that that could be severely hamper him from doing his job.

Ivanka also drew negative attention about the "zero tolerance" policy when she visited a school in Syracuse, New York, on Monday. The first interview occurred last fall and the questions were limited to former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn, who subsequently pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and began cooperating with Mueller.

Zaid said Kushner now faces significant constraints without the ability to view highly sensitive intelligence information.

Kushner - the point of contact for foreign officials during the campaign and transition - was alluded to, though not by name, in Flynn's guilty plea as a transition team official who encouraged Flynn to contact foreign government officials, about a UN Security Council resolution against Israeli settlements. The delay in Kushner's case was caused by a backlog in the new administration and Kushner's extensive financial wealth, which required lengthy review, Lowell said at the time.
