A massive airstrike struck an ISIS-held area of eastern Syria, killing 54 people including 28 civilians as well as 26 terror fanatics, a war monitor said earlier today.

The strikes were conducted where the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said dozens of people had been killed by an air raid.

It was not immediately clear if the raid on the eastern Deir Ezzor province was carried out by an Iraqi plane or the coalition, according to the monitor, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria.

US-led coalition carried out the air strike near the town of Albu Kamal east of the Euphrates River.

The Syrian government has repeatedly accused the U.S. of targeting civilians in Syria, while urging the United Nations to put an end to the coalition's military operations in Syria. He added in his email to the news agency that the report of civilian casualties had been forwarded to the "Civilian Casualty Cell for further assessment".

Daesh terrorists swept across Syria and Iraq in 2014, declaring autonomy in areas they controlled.

At least 35 civilians were killed late Thursday by airstrikes on a Daesh-held position in Syria's Deir ez-Zor province.

Al-Soussa lies to the east of the Euphrates River, which runs diagonally through Deir El-Zour, splitting the province in half.

The Syrian military and its allies have also been accused of mounting civilian casualties in their own campaign to restore all of Syria under Assad's control.

IS militants in the area have come under attack from Syrian government forces backed by Russian air power from the west and US-supported Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) backed by U.S. coalition air power from the east.

Russian-backed government forces raised the flag in Daraa city on Thursday, but the regime still has two regions outside its control - and influential neighbours - to contend with.
