  • 3 senior sales executives leave Apple India, as company struggles with sales in the country

According to Counterpoint, Apple's market share stood at about 2.5% at the end of 2017.

India has been a tough market for Apple to crack.

Three of Apple's senior sales executives are reportedly said to be leaving the company on account of struggling sales and further rearrangements made to its distribution system. This includes national sales, distribution head and head of operator business Rahul Puri, head of iPhone sales Jayant Gupta, and national sales head of telecom Manish Sharma.

But unlike Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer whose value priced handsets are rocketing off the shelves in India, Apple is having a hard time. Coulomb took the job at the end of past year.

Bloomberg cited sources who said the company's head of India operations, Michel Coulomb, had been slow to develop key business relationships with carriers in India.

Many customers in India are cost-conscious and looking for the best bang for their buck, in terms of hardware specs and scoring the latest devices. It sold just 3.2 million iPhones in India a year ago, while less than a million were shifted in the first half of 2018, Counterpoint said.

Counterpoint's Research Director Neil Shah says that Apple's inattention to the Indian market could lead it to lose whatever small market share it has. While the iPhone's price tag puts it out of reach for most, the CEO has predicted that young, aspiring Indians moving up the socio-economic ladder would increasingly look to upgrade.

"IPhone India sales were weak in the first half of 2018 and, even if they show a big jump in the traditionally strong second half, Apple will still fall short of a year ago", Neil Shah, a research director with Counterpoint, told Bloomberg. But it needs to do more, Shah said. The inattention could send more users to Android phones, making it hard for Apple to build a user base and win loyalty. All Apple devices available in India are imported, except for the iPhone SE that is assembled by Wistron in the country.
