Sinn Féin's Gerry Adams has called for those behind attacks on his home and that of Bobby Storey to meet with him to explain their "rationale".

"These were reprehensible and cowardly attacks on the family homes of Gerry Adams and Bobby Storey".

They claim grandchildren were in the driveway of Adams' home minutes beforehand.

"I would appeal for calm".

Police confirmed they were investigating the incidents and accused dissident nationalist militants of responsibility, while Sinn Fein blamed the attacks on "increasingly desperate and irrelevant groups" in a post on Twitter.

Adams led Sinn Fein from 1983 until February.

Speaking at a press conference in west Belfast on Saturday morning, Mr Adams, flanked by Mr Storey and North Belfast MLAs Gerry Kelly and Caral Ni Chuilin, said: "Obviously those who were involved, like the people that were out in east Belfast or out in Derry, have their own agenda in all of this".

Police have seized remnants of large industrial firework type devices, which they say are "capable of causing serious damage or injury", at both locations.

He added that in some of the worst cases he has seen, insect bites can cause cellulitis, which is an infection of the skin. This chimes with the Met Office records of the heatwave.

But Adams called for those responsible to come forward and explain themselves.

The attacks took place in west Belfast on Friday night.

Rioting began last weekend in the second city of Londonderry, fuelled by dissident Irish republicans opposed to mainstream Sinn Fein's commitment to securing a united Ireland through purely peaceful means.

Those sentiments were echoed in the Republic of Ireland, where Taoiseach Leo Varadkar denounced the Belfast attacks, as well as the wider violence across Northern Ireland.

Sinn Fein dismisses the dissidents as unrepresentative gangs with no political strategy that use the cloak of republicanism to engage in criminality.

She said: 'This week we have seen those who remain wedded to violence bring chaos and fear onto our streets, in scenes which we had all hoped we would never witness again.

Alliance Party leader Naomi Long tweeted: "It seems this week some people are determined to drag us back into violence at whatever cost".
